Location ideas and practical planning
Orange County portrait locations.
Explore twelve park, garden, historic, and coastal settings. These examples help narrow a location request; they do not reserve access. Photography permissions, parking, admission, and travel are reviewed separately before a final quote.
A beautiful location is not a reserved location. The studio reviews the exact activity, venue jurisdiction, permits, access, and costs before approving a session. Admission, parking, permits, travel, and studio rental are separate items. Rules can change; official sources below take precedence.
Sources checked November 6, 2026. These examples do not promise same-day permits or access.
Accessibility varies by entrance and portrait area. The notes below describe documented features or items to confirm, not ADA certification. Share step-free access, mobility, sensory, or restroom needs so the studio can plan a suitable route. Reference photographs show the setting, not the studio’s portrait work or current conditions.

Santiago Oaks Regional Park

Photo: Jacob Montgomery. Santiago Oaks - panoramio.jpg · CC BY-SA 3.0. Resized and converted to WebP.Creekside vegetation, mature trees, an orange grove, and foothill scenery create a more rustic outdoor setting.
- For families
- Choose a short, manageable route for young children. Trails are shared with hikers, cyclists, and equestrians; a portrait session should not block access.
- Access and planning
- Some routes have natural surfaces and grades. The park says trails may close for up to three days after rain; confirm access before choosing a meeting point.
- Accessibility
- Natural-surface route; confirm access
Rustic trails can include uneven ground and grades. Do not assume the trail photo locations are wheelchair accessible. The studio should confirm a short suitable route with the park before booking.

Mission San Juan Capistrano

Photo: Bernard Gagnon. Mission San Juan Capistrano 02.jpg · CC BY-SA 3.0. Resized and converted to WebP.Historic architecture and garden spaces provide a distinctive backdrop for family milestones and portraits.
- For families
- Arrive camera-ready. Respect religious spaces and historic structures; no climbing walls or sitting in windows.
- Access and planning
- Basic portrait reservations are at least one hour, with one photographer and no assistant. Outfit changes require a qualifying longer or upgraded booking.
- Accessibility
- Partially wheelchair accessible
Most gardens and museum rooms are accessible, but some historic rooms, including the eighteenth-century South Wing, are not. Use the Mission’s accessibility map to choose the route. Loan wheelchairs are not provided.
Official access and visitor information - Admission
- Posed portraits need a photography reservation. Confirm guest count and any separate visitor tickets; ordinary admission does not replace the permit.
- Parking
- Use the Mission’s official directions and downtown parking guidance; allow time to walk to the entrance. Parking is separate from the photography reservation.
- Photography permission
- Permit or advance authorization required
All posed portraits require an advance reservation and permit, even when the photographer is a friend. The Mission separately reviews commercial use and equipment.
- Photography fees
- Published portrait package: $90/hour Tuesday–Sunday or $110/hour Monday, priced per 1–5 photographed guests. Extra guests/time change the venue cost; confirm the final reservation total.

Heisler Park

Photo: NorbertNagel. Heisler Park - Laguna Beach - California - 01.jpg · CC BY-SA 4.0. Resized and converted to WebP.An oceanfront park setting offers coastal views and landscaped public spaces without making every portrait a sand-level photograph.
- For families
- Choose an accessible meeting point before the session. Beach access and park routes differ; supervise children around coastal edges and steps.
- Access and planning
- Public paths remain shared. The permitted location, daylight, weather, tides, and access route determine which backgrounds are practical.
- Accessibility
- Confirm park and beach access separately
Choose the specific bluff-top or beach meeting point before booking. A suitable park route does not establish step-free access to every cove. The studio will verify stairs, grades and restroom access for the chosen route.
Official access and visitor information - Admission
- Photography permit costs are separate from any parking charges. A photography permit does not promise exclusive use.
- Parking
- Plan for city parking and a walk to the agreed meeting point; check posted rates and restrictions.
- Photography permission
- Permit or advance authorization required
Professional family portraits on City of Laguna Beach property require a still-photo permit. Apply at least two business days ahead; summer time windows and daylight limits apply.
- Photography fees
- Published professional still-photo permit: $100 for two hours, plus $50 per additional hour. Commercial productions use a different permit and fee structure.

Crystal Cove State Park

Photo: NorbertNagel. Crystal Cove State Beach - 01.jpg · CC BY-SA 4.0. Resized and converted to WebP.Beach, bluffs, and the Historic District offer several coastal looks, with different access and permission requirements.
- For families
- Plan the specific access route around children and mobility needs. Sand, slopes, waves, and the walk from parking can add time; keep the session safely away from surf.
- Access and planning
- Equipment must be carried to the approved location. Dogs are limited to permitted paved areas, not the beach or backcountry. Check alerts, tides, and closures before travel.
- Accessibility
- Accessible routes and beach equipment
State Parks lists a paved accessible bluff-top trail, accessible parking and restrooms, and beach wheelchairs at the Historic District and Moro day-use area. Sand can obstruct the beach ramp at high tide. Confirm current closures and equipment availability.
Official access and visitor information - Admission
- State-park day-use charges and any photography review, monitoring, or location costs are separate.
- Parking
- Use an approved day-use lot and check current posted rates. Historic District access can involve a longer walk or shuttle arrangements.
- Photography permission
- Permit or advance authorization required
Arrange professional-photo permission with the park and California Film Commission. Small portraits may be considered on some weekends, but approval is date/location dependent; holidays and larger productions have additional restrictions.
- Photography fees
- Get a project-specific park/CFC quote. Review or monitor charges may apply; do not treat admission or a parking pass as a photography permit.

Huntington City Beach

Photo: DHN at English Wikipedia. Sunset at Huntington Beach.jpg · CC BY-SA 3.0. Resized and converted to WebP.Open sand and the pier area provide a classic Huntington Beach setting for family portraits.
- For families
- A shorter beach session can work well when the meeting point is close to parking. Plan around wind and keep children out of active surf and bicycle routes.
- Access and planning
- Confirm the exact beach segment. Huntington City Beach and Sunset Beach have City jurisdiction; Huntington State Beach and Bolsa Chica State Beach have different permitting.
- Accessibility
- Beach access options available
The official visitor bureau lists paved access, Mobi-Mats and beach wheelchairs. Choose an entry near these features and confirm the mat and equipment availability before the session; open sand may still require a beach wheelchair.
Official access and visitor information - Admission
- Public beach access does not reserve a portrait area. Any permitted production or special setup can add costs.
- Parking
- City beach lots and meters have separate charges; check the selected lot, posted limits, and event closures.
- Photography permission
- Depends on activity, equipment, and jurisdiction
The Huntington Beach Film Commission says engagement/family sessions for personal use do not need a permit on City-jurisdiction property. Advertising, portfolio/public use, special setups, or State Beach locations need separate review.
- Photography fees
- No City photo-permit fee is stated for the qualifying personal-use family-session exception. Parking remains separate; other production permissions must be quoted.

- For families
- Select one meeting point and leave time for parking. The sand and busy boardwalk areas need close supervision and a flexible plan.
- Access and planning
- City beaches, pier structures, nearby private property, and Crystal Cove are not interchangeable locations. Avoid blocking public routes or setting up unapproved equipment.
- Accessibility
- Beach wheelchairs available at select entries
The city lists beach-wheelchair checkout at Newport Pier and Corona del Mar State Beach. This does not guarantee equipment at Balboa Pier. Confirm the pickup location and a suitable route to the chosen portrait spot before booking.

Photo: Photograph by Mike Peel (www.mikepeel.net).. Seal Beach pier.jpg · CC BY-SA 4.0. Resized and converted to WebP.A small beach-town setting offers sand and pier-area backgrounds close to Main Street.
- For families
- Choose a simple meeting point and keep the session away from water, active paths, and pier traffic. A public beach is shared space, not a reserved set.
- Access and planning
- Confirm current pier access and the intended beach segment. The City’s permit packet places limits on filming dates and activities; those conditions require review for the actual portrait plan.
- Accessibility
- Confirm the current access plan
A wheelchair-accessible city shuttle serves the pier area, but that does not verify access across the sand. The studio will confirm the chosen entry, beach-mat or wheelchair availability, and accessible restrooms with Marine Safety.
Official access and visitor information - Admission
- Public access and any parking payment do not establish permission for a paid photography session.
- Parking
- Use legal City beach or street parking and check posted rates and time limits.
- Photography permission
- Confirm the exact session with the authority
The City’s film packet addresses professional photography, business licensing, and commercial still permits. Ask the City to classify the planned paid family session before approval; the linked packet also contains weekday/season restrictions and a ten-business-day lead time.
- Photography fees
- Current session-specific fees must be confirmed. The City’s linked fee packet is labeled FY 2025–26, so its amounts are not presented here as guaranteed current charges.

Bommer Canyon Preserve

Sycamores and a rustic canyon setting suit a nature-led portrait plan in protected open space.
- For families
- Choose a route that matches children’s walking ability and stay within approved areas. This is a preserve, so the plan should suit the site rather than rearranging the landscape.
- Access and planning
- Some areas are guided-access only. Cattle Camp has its own reservation rules; ordinary hike-in access does not include its parking. Dogs are not permitted on preserve trails.
- Accessibility
- Trail access needs individual review
Open trails are not necessarily wheelchair-accessible trails. The selected route’s surface, grades, distance and any weather closures need review. Share mobility needs before choosing a preserve session.
Official access and visitor information - Admission
- Photography/access permission is separate from a facility reservation; the studio will confirm the actual required approvals.
- Parking
- Use the official trailhead/access plan. Cattle Camp parking is not generally available for ordinary hike-in use, apart from specific access events.
- Photography permission
- Permit or advance authorization required
Irvine requires access permission for professional photography in its Open Space Preserve. The City may also require film/facility permits; Cattle Camp is separately reserved.
- Photography fees
- Request the applicable access, filming, or facility fee quote. No single permit price covers every preserve location or setup.
