Location ideas and practical planning

Los Angeles portrait locations.

Six Los Angeles-area examples for families considering an architectural, garden, park, or beach session. Each authority sets its own photography rules. Availability, travel, permits, and any location charges require review before confirmation.

A beautiful location is not a reserved location. The studio reviews the exact activity, venue jurisdiction, permits, access, and costs before approving a session. Admission, parking, permits, travel, and studio rental are separate items. Rules can change; official sources below take precedence.

Sources checked November 6, 2026. These examples do not promise same-day permits or access.

Accessibility varies by entrance and portrait area. The notes below describe documented features or items to confirm, not ADA certification. Share step-free access, mobility, sensory, or restroom needs so the studio can plan a suitable route. Reference photographs show the setting, not the studio’s portrait work or current conditions.

Pasadena City Hall

Courtyard and civic architecture provide a formal backdrop for portraits with a more architectural feel.

For families
Keep the plan simple and arrive ready. Steps, public walkways, ceremonies, and visitors can affect the route and available backgrounds.
Access and planning
City Hall is a working civic property. Do not assume exclusive use or availability of a courtyard/rotunda during an event.
Accessibility
Confirm the courtyard route

Confirm the step-free entrance and permitted courtyard areas with the City before booking. The building’s historic stairs should not be assumed to be the only route, or a suitable route for every participant.

Official access and visitor information
Admission
Photography access does not reserve event space. Separate permissions apply to events and commercial production.
Parking
Use legal City parking and allow for the walk to the agreed meeting point; check meters, garages, and event restrictions.
Photography permission
Depends on activity, equipment, and jurisdiction

Pasadena says personal photography at City Hall does not need a commercial film permit, but professional photographers need a Pasadena business license. Confirm the intended portrait use and scheduling with Business License; commercial work follows Film Office rules.

Photography fees
Confirm any business-license or commercial-permit charges directly. Event/courtyard reservations have separate costs and do not substitute for photography requirements.

Pasadena · Garden

Arlington Garden

A community garden setting offers planted paths and intimate outdoor backgrounds for family milestones.

For families
Children need close supervision near the surrounding streets. Choose a short route and arrive camera-ready; avoid climbing or disturbing garden features.
Access and planning
The garden remains open to other visitors during portrait sessions. A portable toilet is listed, rather than a full restroom/changing facility.
Accessibility
Route and restroom limitations

The garden’s FAQ reports street parking and no public restroom building; a standard portable toilet is on site. An accessible restroom and step-free route through the chosen garden area have not been verified. Confirm these needs before booking.

Official access and visitor information
Admission
General garden visits are free; a planned portrait session requires a separate permit.
Parking
Use lawful nearby parking and check local signs; allow time to reach the meeting point.
Photography permission
Permit or advance authorization required

Planned family, maternity, graduation, holiday-card, and other portrait sessions require a permit, including amateur/friend photographers. Reserve in advance; only a limited number of photo permits are allowed each hour.

Photography fees
Use the official booking calendar for the current permit price and available slot. A free garden visit is not a free portrait permit.

Arcadia · Botanical garden

Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden

Garden landscapes, a waterfall setting, and mountain views offer a varied portrait backdrop within a large botanical site.

For families
Plan walking time, breaks, and a focused route for young children. A photo permit does not make the grounds private or reserve every background.
Access and planning
The current portrait page limits walk-up permits to 14 people including the photographer, with a 3 p.m. entrance deadline. Some paved routes are available; pets are not admitted apart from qualifying service animals.
Accessibility
Paved accessible garden routes

The Arboretum lists about 2.5 miles of paved paths, accessible parking near the entrance, and on-site wheelchair and e-scooter rental without reservations. Confirm the desired garden route and rental availability.

Official access and visitor information
Admission
Published daytime admission: adults $18; seniors 62+ and students with ID $14; children 3–12 $8; children 2 and under free. Check participant admission arrangements as well as the separate photo permit.
Parking
Review the official visit/accessibility information and allow time for parking and entrance checks.
Photography permission
Permit or advance authorization required

All posed/formal photography requires permission. The current photography page distinguishes walk-up portraits, assisted reservations, and commercial work; releases are month-by-month.

Photography fees
Check the current permit booking and admission prices. An older portrait page has a different fee/rule set; this guide does not rely on it.

Los Angeles · Architecture and views

Griffith Observatory grounds

Observatory architecture and broad views give a family session a distinctly Los Angeles setting.

For families
A busy destination with slopes and shared routes. Pick a legal, permitted exterior area and allow extra arrival time rather than rushing children through crowds.
Access and planning
Personal portrait equipment is limited to a camera and discreet exterior tripod use. Staged portraits are restricted in several interior/exterior areas and must not block public access.
Accessibility
Accessible grounds and arrival options

The Observatory lists ramps, accessible parking, a shuttle drop-off area and accessible restrooms. Mobility devices are welcome on the exterior grounds. Confirm a permitted photo location and arrival route; some historic interior areas have limitations.

Official access and visitor information
Admission
Admission to the Observatory grounds and building is free; paid shows are separate and are not part of a portrait session.
Parking
Paid parking is closest to the Observatory. Roads and lots can be busy; review the official transport options before travel.
Photography permission
Depends on activity, equipment, and jurisdiction

The Observatory permits professional photography for personal use within its guidelines. Commercial photography always needs a City permit and advance staff coordination; extra lights/reflectors are not allowed under the personal-use rule.

Photography fees
No personal-photo permit fee is stated for qualifying activity. Parking and any required commercial permission are separate.

Manhattan Beach · Beach

Manhattan Beach shoreline

Broad sand, ocean views, and the pier-area setting provide a South Bay option for family portraits.

For families
Choose one access point and plan around wind, surf, sand, and children’s walking distance. Keep bike paths and public routes clear.
Access and planning
The shoreline, pier, parking, and nearby City property may involve different authorities. Confirm the exact location and intended image use before scheduling.
Accessibility
Access mat and beach wheelchairs

LA County lists an access mat and beach wheelchairs for Manhattan Beach. Equipment and accessible entries are location-specific, not available at every street. Agree on the meeting point and confirm current equipment access before booking.

Official access and visitor information
Admission
Public beach access is separate from any production permission and does not reserve space.
Parking
County/City lots and street parking have their own charges and limits. Use the selected meeting-point parking plan.
Photography permission
Confirm the exact session with the authority

LA County Beaches & Harbors routes commercial still-photo permits through FilmLA. Confirm how the planned paid family session and any portfolio/advertising use are classified; do not import another city’s family-photo exception.

Photography fees
FilmLA/County charges depend on activity, location, and staffing. Obtain a complete quote; parking and insurance requirements are separate.

Los Angeles · Urban nature park

Vista Hermosa Natural Park

Vista Hermosa Natural Park location reference photograph
Photo creditPhoto: Laurie Avocado. Vista Hermosa Natural Park, 2008.jpg · CC BY 2.0. Resized and converted to WebP.

Native-style planted areas and views toward Downtown Los Angeles offer an urban-natural alternative to a beach or formal garden.

For families
Plan a short route and use shared paths considerately. Keep children supervised, especially near slopes and busy gathering areas.
Access and planning
The MRCA lists parking, restrooms, picnic areas, and accessibility features. The exact route, hours, and available portrait locations still need confirmation.
Accessibility
Accessible features listed by the park

MRCA lists ADA access, parking and restrooms. Select the route using the park map and confirm the approach to the desired viewpoint; the general park designation does not mean every trail is step-free.

Official access and visitor information
Admission
General park use does not establish permission for an organized portrait session.
Parking
Use designated parking and confirm current gate hours and access before the shoot.
Photography permission
Depends on activity, equipment, and jurisdiction

MRCA says staged family and special-occasion portraits may require its noncommercial photography permit. Vista Hermosa has a named permit contact; commercial image use needs separate review.

Photography fees
Request the current MRCA quote and conditions. Older application PDFs are not used here as a guaranteed current fee schedule.
